The complexities of religion, faith, love and tragedy overlap in the pages of Maybe God Was an Irishman, an entertaining and insightful novel by Bernie Donnelly. With a fascinating cast of peripheral characters and multiple storylines that brilliantly overlap, this is an expansive novel that stretches across oceans and philosophies, making it an addictive read for anyone who appreciates clever writing and heartfelt narratives.
Book-ending the novel is the story of Lee “the Skeptic” Thomas, whom readers are introduced to at the very start of the book. He is an investigative journalist for the NYT, who has personally experienced unimaginable tragedy in his life. However, his cynicism is shattered when he witnesses the truth of so-called “miracles” in Ireland, specifically in the work and life of Father Sean, whose birth was signaled in an unusual way.
As a whole, the novel centers on the real-world wonders that certain people are able to achieve through kindness, compassion, patience, and self-sacrifice. Perhaps there is such a thing as divine intervention and the gentle nudging of God, but the tangible miracles of good-hearted humans are often even more powerful. The end of this novel will leave readers uplifted and refreshed – spiritually, emotionally and philosophically – regardless of one's particular religious beliefs or opinions. That is the sign of a truly great book. SPR review'17

Great read. Kept my interest page to page. It shows that miracles and Devine interventions that occur daily go unrecognized. As I read I felt like I was in the room with the characters experiencing the events and felt the awe of each miracle. Brought me to tears of joyProduct details

Maybe God was an Irishman edition by Bernie Donnelly Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
With no foreknowledge of the author, I picked this book up because of the title. It didn't get set back down until I was complete, because it was easy to read, interesting, and exciting. The story of Jesus in modern terms-well written. Whether you are religious or not, you will enjoy this book.
What a beautiful story of family and faith. i intend to read the next book, Maybe God was an American. The story really touched my heart.
Wonderfully written throughout, may convert more people than St. Patrick, the detailed backgrounds, characters and locales are presented with clarity and feeling. Couldn't put it down, a must read
I loved this book. Front to back in two sittings. a great read for anyone.
I needed an easy read because I was home recuperating from a fall in which I broke my arm. I did not want anything too intricate. The title caught my eye and I decided to try it. I am so happy that I did. This book was thoroughly enjoyable. A little mystery, a little love story, a little church mystique and a lot about how we handle problems that happen to come our way. I will be enjoying more from this author for sure.
This book is hard to explain but for me it was well worth the read. It compares the life of an an orphan baby boy born during the appearance of Haileys Comet in Galway Ireland; to the life of Jesus.
There were many similarities-- but the growth of this boy brought in new people and situations.
This book has a little everything for everyone..Murder, Love, Marriage, and Kidnap.. This book made each person believeable and made me want to know how it was going to end --- and the ending was abrupt --- or was it????
Not being at all religious (or Irish!) I did wonder if this book would really capture my interest. How wrong could I have been! A thoroughly enjoyable and engaging read. Humour, emotion, drama and a little bit of Irish quirkiness - this book has it all. We could all do with a Sean Robinson in our lives. Looking forward to the sequel. Highly recommended.
